A Beginner’s Guide to Spiced Rum

Spiced rum is a spin-off of classic rum, made by distilling sugarcane and maturing it in oak barrels. The maturation stage and factors such as the sugarcane’s caramelization play a role in the resulting color, varying from pale to deep hues. To enhance its flavor profile, spiced rum takes this step a notch higher by infusing spices and occasionally additional caramel for a touch of sweetness. Popular spices include cinnamon, vanilla, cardamom, and cloves, while some brands also add aniseed, nutmeg, or pepper for more depth.
